We have recently been told that the ICA/CCA ratio should be calculated using the Prox ICA only.
Until this time, we have all been using the highest ICA velocity, regardless of it being in the proximal,mid or distal portion.
We would be interested to hear your thoughts, and any relevant references.
Hi all, I am currently studying sonography and doing my training in Adelaide. Recently there has been many discussions in our work place regarding the Doppler angles used when measuring flow velocities in the carotids.
There seems to be two main opinions on this matter;
1/ Using an angle of insonation of 60 degrees or less parallel to the flow, i.e. parallel to the vessel wall. Noting that it is a subjective operation and any error in this angle estimation can be critical, particularly at larger angles.
2/ Maintaining a constant angle of insonation of exactly 60 degrees which would provide greater consistency.
It has also been found that carotid examinations are not often standardised and there is a failure to follow consistent protocols within departments leading to great difficulty in the interpretation of the results and making the comparison of any follow up scans difficult.
I'd love to hear what everyone's doing out there and individual opinions on this matter.

The ASA has undertaken a significant process review and independent 3rd party auditing to ensure that PD-asa is officially ISO 9001 registered. Achieving ISO 9001 is a clear commitment by the ASA to ensure we continue to be widely recognised as the leading provider of CPD programs for sonographers.
Online survey on the use of ultrasound measurements of the cervix is currently being conducted by ASA member Suzanne Connard. All responses are collected anonymously and the results, will be available via soundeffects. Log in- User Name: takesurvey Password: cls123
